SATYAM - SIVAM -
SUNDARAM 2018
KUM. SAHAANA SUKUMAR-
A GIFTED PERFORMER
Sridevi Nrithyalaya's
SATYAM - SIVAM - SUNDARAM commenced day 3 of the festival with Smt.Chitrambari
Krishnakumar lighting the "Kuthuvilakku".
It is indeed a gesture
of Smt. Sheela Unnikrishnan's outstanding respect for the musicians, inviting
them as venerated guests to inaugurate SDN's annual dance festival. Sri Kishore
Mosalikanti inaugurated the festival on the first day, followed by Sri G.
Srikanth (vocalist), Smt. Chitrambari Krishnakumar (vocalist), Sri B.
Muthukumar (Flute Vidwan)
and Sri Guru Bharadwaaj (Mridanga Vidwan) inaugurating the evenings' programs on the other days of the festival.

Day 3 of Satyam Sivam
Sundaram began with the solo Bharathanatyam performance of Kum. Sahaana Sukumar
with her Teacher, Kum. Archana Narayanamurthy on Nattuvangam, Pozhakudi Sri
G.R. Praveen on vocal, Mayavaram Sri T. Viswanathan on Mridangam and Sri
Srinivasan on Violin.
Dressed in a blue
costume, Kum. Sahaana made a brisk entry onto the stage with Kalaimamani
Pandhanallur Sri Srinivasa Pillai's Pushpanjali (Naatai & Adi) executing
crisp Nritta. Pushpanjali was succeeded by a Keerthanam (Hamsadhwani &
Roopakam) on Lord Ganesa composed by His Holiness Swami Shantanand Saraswathi,
in which the elephant headed God was depicted like a cartoon character. This
made one wonder if the choreography was intended to be that way to suit the age
of the artiste performing. The sancharis about Ganesa's birth seemed prolonged
and unnecessary too.
Sahaana's tall figure
with long limbs and her large eyes beautifully supported her dance and
abhinaya.
The invocatory piece
was followed by a Varnam (Revathi & Adi), again a composition of
Pandanallur Sri Srinivasa Pillai, 'Karunai vadivamana Kaiyilai vasane'. This
was an apt selection for the venue and was executed well. Sahaana proved her
ability for performance throughout the piece. Her sincere practice, honesty in
executing what was taught to her and the Teacher, Kum. Archana's efforts in
choreographing the piece to suit the age and caliber of the performer were
evident and one couldn't resist praising the Teacher and student for the same.
The devotaional
Revathy raga Varnam was followed by a light and enthralling song composed by
Yazhpanam Sri Veeramani- "Karpagavalli nin porpadangal pidithen", an
all time favourite of the Mylaporians. Kum. Sanjena Ramesh, disciple of Dr.
Sheela Unnikrishnan, presenting the same song in Day 1 of the festival and this
of Kum. Sahaana's lead one to compare the choreography and appreciate the flair
of the performers in presenting the popular Keerthanam. Sahaana then moved on
to perform Kavadi Chindu composed by Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi on Lord
Muruga. Kudos to the choice of the dance items presented in Sahaana's program
to suit the Temple audience. All rasikas, visitors and devotees who were
gathered there seemed to be enjoying the artistic treat by the up and coming
artiste.
Sahaana concluded her
recital with a Thillana (Ameerkalyani & Adi), yet another composition of
Pandanallur Sri Srinivasa Pillai. The charana sahithyam in praise of Kamakshi
Devi gave a thorough finale to the presentation, covering the major deities of
our Sanathana Dharma. Sahaana proved to be a poised and gifted performer, with
'lakshanas' of a good Narthaki.
